The 6 Top Digital Workplace Trends – Are You Ready?
A recent report from Gartner echoes our most recent blog around the impact of COVID-19 and the rise of remote working.
The Gartner 2020 Digital Workplace Survey reveals that the IT leaders have finally recognised the need to rapidly scale up their digital workplace technology in order to support the long-term resiliency of their business.
“The pandemic rapidly elevated many digital workplace technologies from nice-to-have to must-have status” – Matt Cain, VP Analyst, Gartner
Matt Cain, Distinguished VP Analyst, Gartner, explains: “From meeting solution software, to enterprise chat platforms, to desktop-as-a-service, the pandemic rapidly elevated many digital workplace technologies from nice-to-have to must-have status.”
In its latest article, Gartner reveals the top 6 digital workplace trends that CIOs will be paying attention to in the years to come:
Trend 1: The new work nucleus
This is a set of SaaS-based personal productivity, collaboration and communication tools, merged into one cloud office product. It typically includes instant messaging, email, file sharing, conferencing, document management and editing, search and discovery and collaboration.
Trend 2: Bring your own thing
As fitness bands, voice assistants, smart earbuds and other personal Internet of Things (IoT) wearables and devices start to appear in the office, a growing range of bring your own thing (BYOT) is expected to support remote working.
Trend 3: The distance economy
The increase in virtual meetings, client interactions, job interviews and other business activities all taking place online has boosted the distance economy and a new generation of online meeting solutions.
Trend 4: Smart workspaces
Smart workspace technologies, such as integrated workplace management systems, virtual workspaces and facial recognition, deliver new ways of working while improving workforce efficiency. As employees return to work post-COVID-19, organisations will need to create smart workspaces to better understand how staff can adhere to social distancing rules.
Trend 5: Desktop-as-a-service
The pandemic is expected to accelerate the adoption of Desktop as a service (DaaS) to provide users with an on-demand, virtualised desktop experience delivered from a remotely hosted location.
Trend 6: Democratised technology services
Technology services are expected to be assembled and composed by the people who will actually use them. Gartner defines examples of democratised technology services as:
- Employees who create new business applications using development tools and runtime environments sanctioned by corporate IT. They are empowered by the availability and power of low-code and “no-code” development tools
- Integrator tools, which enable expert business users with minimal IT skills to handle relatively simple application, data and process integration tasks themselves through intuitive, no-code development environments
